July 19, 2001

Arkansas State University Staff Senate met on Thursday, July 19, 2001, at 9:00 a.m. in the Library's Boardroom. The following senators were present:

(1) Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President Phillips at 9:00 a.m.

(2) Minutes: The June 21, 2001, minutes were reviewed and approved. Motion to approve: Senator Poynter/Seconded: Senator Bramblett

(3) Treasurer's Report: Senator Bramblett reported the following balance as of July 18, 2001:Staff Senate Account: $ 2,075.00; Santa Tribe's Account: $547.01; and Staff Senate Agency Fund (Cookbook) Account: $1,146.13. Motion to approve Treasurer's Report: Senator Steele/Seconded: Senator Hunt

(4) Shard Governance Recommendation: Paula James requested that a representative of the Admissions Office be added to the Academic Calendar Committee. After further discussion, Senator Hicks made a motion to support the request to add one representative from the Admission’s Office to the Academic Calendar Committee. Seconded by Senator Hunt. Unanimously approved.

(5) American Red Cross Volunteer: The American Red Cross is seeking an ASU employee to volunteer to serve on their Board of Directors. Contact President Phillips if you are interested in serving.

(6) Town Hall Meeting Update: Chair Poynter noted that the Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at 2:30 pm in the Carl R. Reng Center Ballroom. President Wyatt and the Vice Chancellors/Presidents (or their representative) will answer questions in a panel forum/discussion format. A survey will be sent to staff soliciting questions prior to the event. There will also be questions taken from the audience as time allows. Senators were encouraged to seek questions from their constituency groups. Questions to be asked at the Town Hall can be forwarded to Senator Poynter at Committee is currently working on securing door prizes for the event.

(7) Homecoming Preparations: The Special Events Committee will meet on Monday, July 23 to begin preparation for the Homecoming Event. Homecoming is scheduled for September 22, 2001. If you are interested in working with this committee, contact President Phillips at or by calling extension 3943.

(8) "Arranging Effective Meetings At ASU" Seminar: Senator Hicks agreed to offer a seminar for staff senators and staff serving on shared governance committees. Seminar will be held on August 9, 2001, at 9:00 am - 11:00 am in the Reng Center Ballroom. Preregister by August 3 by contacting Robin Hicks at extension 8200 or at rhicks@astate.edu.

(9) Higher Learning Commission (part of NCA) Discussion: Dr. Lynita Cooksey, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, discussed the process that ASU will undertake as we seek to secure continued accreditation for Arkansas State University. The site visit is scheduled for March 3-5, 2003. A handout was distributed discussing the importance of accreditation. For more information, please contact Dr. Rick McDaniel or Dr. John Beineke, Co-Chairs of the HLC/NCA Self-Study Steering Committee. A web site will be ready during the Fall 2001 semester so that employees can keep abreast of the HLC/NCA activities.

(8) Old Business:  Letter of appointments for classified staff are in the process of being distributed by Human Resources.  

BBQ Fundraiser for Shannon Brumley Fund is scheduled for Wednesday, August, 1, 2001 in front of the Physical Plant.  Contact Physical Plant at extension 2066 for more information.

New Staff Senate brochures were distributed to senators.  Senator Hardin agreed to send a brochure and welcome letter to each new employee.

(9) New Business: Senator Steele requested using the Staff Senate tent during the fundraiser for Shannon Brumley.  Senator Hunt made a motion to grant permission for this use and it was seconded by Senator Bramblett.  Senator Steele suggested that the Staff Senate establish guidelines for the use of the tent in the future.  After no further discussion, the Senate unanimously approved the request.

(10) Next Meeting: August 16, 2001, at 9:00 a.m. in Library's Boardroom (8th Floor). Mr. Steve Owens, Vice President for University Advancement, will speak to the Staff Senate. Also, staff from ASU-Beebe will be joining us.

With no further business to be discussed, the meeting adjourned at 9:55 a.m.
