"Make the Difference"

March 16, 2000

Arkansas State University Staff Senate met on March 16, at 9:00 a.m. in the Library's Board Room.

The Senators present were as follows:

I.  Call to order:  The meeting was called to order by President Tammy Fowler at 9:02 a.m.

II.  Minutes:  The minutes from the February 2000 meeting were approved as read.
Motion:  Senator Faulk/Second:  Senator White/Southard

III.  Treasurer's Report:  Senator Jackie McDaniel reported no change with a budge balance of $379.12. Motion:  Senator McCoy/Second:  Senator Southard

IV.  President's Report:    Given by President Tammy Fowler.

-Forfeiture of vacation accruals:    Dr. Wyatt removed vacation proposal and no vacation forfeiture policy will be in place.

V.  Notice of Appointments:    Jennus Burton stated that every employee will be issued a "Notice of Appointment" effective July 1, 2000.  The Staff Handbook will be amended to reflect this appointment change.

VI.  First Day Benefits:  Jennus Burton stated that all employees with the exception of students and seasonal temporary employees will receive benefits which will be first day effective.  Also, a new employee will be under a six month probationary period.

VII.  UPC Update:     President Fowler discussed the Professional Development policy which has been presented to the Board of Trustees in May.  The implementation of this policy will allow employees to take advantage of this benefit effective July 1.

VIII.  Fund-Raising:  Jackie McDaniel discussed cookbooks being a fund-raising project for next fiscal year.

IX.    Staff Senate Picnic:    The Staff Senate Picnic will be May 17 from 11 am to 2 pm.  The Picnic Committee is discussing the options of a Bake Sale and/or Silent Auction during the picnic.

X.    Summer Hours:    The hours of 7:30 am to 4:30 am was discussed.  Senator Southard made a recommendation to propose these hours to the Shared Governance Committee and Senator Faulk seconded that motion.  Motion: passed.

XI.    Early Retirement:    Senator Faulk made a motion not to move forward with the Early Retirement issue and Senator Meyer seconded that motion.  Motion: passed.

XII.    Extra Compensation:    The issue of Extra Compensation was discussed and Senator Faulk made the motion to close this issue and Senator Broadaway seconded that motion. Motion: passed.

XIII.    Wellness Program:    The Wellness Program was discussed - additional information to follow.

XIV.    Next Meeting:    The next Staff Senate Meeting will be April 20, 2000 at 9 am in the Library Board Room.  Staff Senate elections will be held at this time.

XV.    Meeting Adjourned:    10:15 a.m.  Motion: Senator Faulk/Second: Senator Meyer.
