What is the Arkansas State University Staff Senate?
The ASU Staff Senate is a forum to reflect the needs and interests
of the non-faculty employees of the university. Employees are encouraged
to utilize the Staff Senate as an outlet to express views and ideas of
interest to staff.
What is the mission of the ASU Staff Senate?
The mission of the ASU Staff Senate is to represent all ASU
non-faculty employees of the university. The Staff Senate endeavors to
provide a forum for all staff members and to participate constructively
in matters that benefit the university and the staff it represents. In
addition, the Staff Senate serves to advise the president of the university
on all matters of concern to the staff and to assist in disseminating information
to non-faculty employees of the university.
Who are "staff?"
The Staff Senate identifies "staff" as all full-time, non-faculty
employees with fringe benefits and all part-time employees. University
employees represented by the Student Government Association or who hold
both staff and faculty rank are also eligible to be represented by the
ASU Staff Senate. All staff are invited to take an active part.
Who is eligible to participate in the Staff Senate?
Membership on the Staff Senate is open to all full-time, non-faculty
employees with fringe benefits and part-time employees up to the level
of vice president. The president and/or vice president(s) shall not be
eligible for membership. All staff employees are encouraged to attend open
meetings of the Staff Senate when duties permit and to communicate with
representatives of the Staff Senate on matters of interest.
How is the Staff Senate organized?
To fairly represent the diverse needs and interests of all staff
members, the Staff Senate is represented by seven categories, including
part-time employees and six groups of full-time employees by equal employment
opportunity (EEO) classifications:
Executive Managerial/Administrative Professional Non-Faculty Technical/Para-professional Skilled Crafts Service/Maintenance Secretarial/Clerical Part-Time
A ratio of one representative for every 35 employees allows each
staff classification a fair representation. The part-time employees shall
be represented through an associate membership by two appointed part-time
employees.
What is my EEO classification?
Each election year, the Staff Senate sends out nomination ballots
to all staff members with a listing of university employees grouped by
classification. This gives staff an opportunity to identify who is in their
classification and who is eligible to be nominated as a representative
on the Staff Senate. New employees are urged to contact the Office of Human
Resources or a member of the Staff Senate to identify their classification
and to get further information about the Staff Senate.
Is my participation necessary?
Staff participation is not mandatory but is encouraged for all
staff who wish to:
professionally interact with other staff members on campus
keep abreast of current issues of interest to staff
voice their opinions and concerns
take an active part in the quality of campus life
When and where does the Staff Senate meet?
The Staff Senate holds monthly meetings on the third Wednesday
of each month. Check the calendar
for exact time and place. Everyone is invited to attend monthly meetings
as duty permits.
